This is V1 of the sight...don’t like it! It is too high, I screwed up and cut it too narrow so the female dovetail shows and the diameter of .100 is too narrow too. V2 will be .115 diameter and much closer to the the top bbl flat and taper a bit more. The ‘Ivory’ bead is synthetic Ivory. Turned with a .058” dia. stem to fit into the blade. I made a filling guide from tool steel to file the taper and keep the blade ‘round’ chucked up in the lathe rig in the pic.

The older I get the fatter I need my front sight so I found .100 to be too thin. Then I found some " T " iron that was .125 thick and could make a much more visible to me sight even after tapering it some what.

Interesting front sight, but I prefer the more 'PC' type of sight. Your front sight is beautifully made, but I feel your front sight's design is too "modern" looking.
It would be absolutely perfect on a modern rifle's raised front sight base.

The sight on Taylor's Joseph Lang rifle is the ultimate & perfectly matches other front sights such as I have seen on a Purdey rifle, etc.

I seem to see my sight better if it is tapered from the face to the front like that Lang sight.

I agree- and that is why all of the sights pictured so far, have that taper, some more than others.

Daryl I like you second picture of a sight. My V2 will be more along those lines. I agree that mine looks a bit to modern for my eyes too, that’s one of the reasons for a number two.

The slanted brass beads show up amazingly well in the bush or when light is dim.
A touch with a dry erase felt marking pen, makes the front sight non-reflective in bright light and then a touch with a finger or thumb removes it.
Dry erase felt pens are flat-black, not shiny black like a permanent felt marker pen.

Rocket ship to hood ornament...I may not be going in the right direction lol.
Here are a few photos showing the holding fixture and the grind on the fly cutter to mill the front sight basic form. The fly cutter was 4” in diameter at a speed of around 130 RPM, the slowest my Bridgeport clone will go. The sight material is 12L14.

Thanks for the kind words, it is very much appreciated. It has two pipes, one just back of the muzzle and the entry pipe and it has 3 barrel pins of .063” music wire with a 32” bbl. it took awhile making that front sight, I work slow and I’m 84 with a really bad back, so if I can get 3 to 4 hours in the shop a day I’m doing good. I’ll try to get some photos of the rifle taken and posted. All that’s left to do is determine the rear sight height and machine that. I plan on a folding rear sight with on fixed and one folding blade and after that the engraving. Its a .58 cal and I plan on sighting it in at 100 yards with a pretty stiff load like 120 gns for the fixed blade and 150 yards for the folding leaf.
