Another rifle
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:09:08 PM »
Here's one I built a while ago.  Thought I would share it since I haven't posted anything for some time.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jim

Beautiful shading with your stain and finish too.  Really lays to rest the notion that a beautiful rifle has to have a super duper curly piece of wood.  Along with the overall lines and contrast in your carving, that's one of the prettiest rifles I've ever seen.
God Bless.

I add comment to the others. Absolutely stunning work. I love to enlarge the carving and look at how you do all the modeling of the leaves. Great work. Thanks for sharing it.

That's AWFUL.
Awful crisp and clean, that is. I don't know how you do it, Jim, how you make you carving so clean. Great eye for design, on top of technical ability.

Jim,
Your work blows my mind! :o  Perfection to the highest degree in both workmanship and design.  I was amazed looking at your rifles at the CLA show.  How you do what you do is beyond my comprehension.  Outstanding!  Thanks for sharing another fine rifle.

Thank you everyone!  I'll see if I can't find a few more pictures to post tomorrow.  Compliments are nice, but questions are better.  In my mind all we can do to learn, keep getting better and help all of this progress the better!  Thanks again guys!

Jim,

First of all, my compliments on a stunningly beautiful rifle.  Per your post, I have some questions.  In fact, since I am now an aerospace engineer, I am constantly making up data summaries for the hardware I build and test.  I am always interested in all of the details about any of the rifles and pistols that get posted on this site, so I thought of offering a blank data sheet for use by anyone posting a new or old firearm.  It would take the poster / builder just a few minutes to let us all know some of the details most of us would be interested in.  My suggested data sheet (and questions) follows:

Firearm Data Sheet

School (if applicable):
Caliber:
Barrel Length:
Barrel Make / Type:
Barrel Finish Method:
Lock Make / Type:
Lock Finish Method:
Stock Wood:
Stain Type / Method:
Finish Type / Method:
Overall Length:
Length of Pull:
Drop at Heel:
Weight:
General Notes:

Outstanding work.  In all aspects!  Really impressive overall appeal.  I understand why someone of Jim's caliber would purchase your work.

Good suggestions on the data sheet Dave.   I'll give it a try.

School:  Not based on any historical longrifle school
Caliber:  54
Barrel Length:  44"
Barrel Make / Type:  Rice Lancaster "C" weight barrel
Barrel Finish Method:  Slightly rusted, rust then removed to leave a slight texture to the metal surface.  Surface then darkened slightly to take the edge off the otherwise bright metal.  A comercial product called "Historic House Parts Brass Darkening Solution" was used for this.
Lock Make / Type:  Chambers Early Ketland
Lock Finish Method:  Carburized and finished with the "Brass Darkening Solution" same as barrel
Stock Wood:  Sugar Maple
Stain Type / Method:  Iron Nitrate
Finish Type / Method:  A little of everything!  Some Permalyn, Minwax Antique Oil, Eric Kettenburgs Oil and I think maybe a little Tried and True oil.  Some of finish darkened with pigment and dye to create variation in finish.  Soot primarily used to darken finish.
Overall Length: ??
Length of Pull:  Approx. 13 5/8"
Drop at Heel:  Not sure, but likely somewhere around 3"
Weight:  ??
