Replica Brown Bess Question
« on: February 16, 2023, 10:57:13 PM »
I have this GRICE marked Brown Bess replica. This isn't a Pedersoli.  No real identification marks on barrel. Is it Miroku or possibly Indian? Looks to have been a long time wall hanger. Any ideas?

With all the alphabet soup stamped on the barrel, my guess is Indian.

Hi,
Somebody tried to copy a Pedersoli Bess.  The lock plate engraving seems to give it away.  It looks like the Pedersoli, even has the incorrect Grice 1762, but it is different.  The crown is different and so is the lettering.  The maker added the crown arrows but forgot to cap them with little crowns.  Same thing on the barrel tang.  He did a fine job on the inletting and finish.  It is unfortunate that he copied a Pedersoli rather than a real pattern 1769 Bess.  I have no idea about the barrel.  It looks far better than those on India-made stuff but the letter soup is a mystery to me.

The engraving looks Indian to me & almost identical to the "style and cut" as the engraving on some Indian brass nick-nacks  (teapot and tray, cream and sugar bowls) my mother bought back in the 60's.

What kind of wood is it ?   That is helpful in determining if India made.
It looks like it is to me, perhaps being worked over by someone on this side of the ocean  :)   There are a few reenacting groups that do this on a routine basis

Gun is an early Pedersoli before they incorporated lock "stamp" into castings.  Hand engraved.  Inside of lock stamped MADE IN ITALY. It has a new home. :)

if a 46 in. barrel could be a coach harness gun.

Reason it didn't say "Pedersoli" could have been because it's a Navy Arms? Just saying.  I think the lock engraving looks terrific, IMHO.  I think whoever has rehomed it is quite fortunate.
