X Rated Powder Horn
« on: February 17, 2023, 01:41:57 AM »
Well that got your attention….

Here’s an interesting powder horn that’s dated 1759. It’s not in he best of shape because of some bug chews and worn areas, unfortunately in the area of the owners name. But it shows something I’ve never seen on an 18th century horn before, it shows a buck mating with a doe with another buck nearby. I’d be interested in knowing if anyone else has seen a horn depicting something similar. Poor condition or not, it’s definitely a conversation piece.

That horn depicts a mid 18th century version of today's modern game cameras!  What the hunter saw!  ;D

A very cool and interesting powderhorn you have Frank!  Thank you for sharing it!

Frank,
Neat horn. I saw a horn about 30 years ago that depicted George Washington with schwantz hanging out! I was too new in the hobby to realize the significance of this. I wish I had bought the horn.

There are some Scottish flat horns from the 1700s that have wildly pornographic scenes on them. Guess the Scots were a lusrty bunch in those times. Nice horn Frank and certainly out of the ordinary. Thank you for posting the photos.

Nothing bad there. Any child growing up on a farm would've seen that regularly and never needed a lecture on Birds and Bees.

My late mom told me the story about the only time she got a spanking from her grandfather.

She was caught watching the bull breeding the milk cows on the dairy farm when she was around 10 years old.

Granddad (my GGrandfather) immigrated here to the states from Devonshire England in the late 1880's.

From mom's story, I have concluded those old Englishmen were a bit puritanical in their ways!

This is true. But I wonder why someone would carve such things on a horn.

Engraved horns featured several different scenes that likely offended someone.  Bare chested mermaids were common on horns featuring coastal town or maritime scenes,  Semi nude women were shown in rare political cartoon horns, and others including one called a "winged fury".  Male private parts were often featured on animals, particularly on the lion and unicorn that was part of the British crest.  I guess the offense was in the eye of the viewer.  Not much has changed in that arena.

Being as the lucky buck's left foreleg is on the other side of the doe, he could have been standing beside the doe on the uphill side. Someone later added the dark phallus looking thingy..........................Bob

As Jeff said the private parts of the Lion and Unicorn on originals are not hard to find...as well as various other random critters. Several horns in the Dresslar book show female natives topless. Figure heads on ships with mermaids and female forms not covered were common as well. There is certainly precedent for it. I've only done one coat of arms. I had to go back and look to see if I worked in any "equipment" on the lion and unicorn....I did not. However, the reference on the unicorn was packing.

There are some pretty graphic acts of war such as beheadings and scalpings on several originals. I did once shoot a redcoat with a cannon ball on a horn.
