Making Meat

Deer season in my part of the world is kicking off. Took some photos of a recent successful hunt.

The bag, horn and boucheron are all from American makers that I've had made and shipped here or bought over the past 12 months. The rifle is a GRRW .54 shooting 100gn Swiss 2F, peanut oil lubed pillow ticking patch and a cast .535 ball. Shot was 60-70 yards, high shoulder took out the spine and dropped him on the spot. As is pretty much all my hunting, it was spot and stalk.

Looking to upgrade my rifle, but that's a post for another day.

That is a fallow spike. Fallow come in 4 colours, those being black, white, red (common) and menil. This is a menial deer.

We hunt deer, ducks, quail, foxes, rabbits and hares down south here.

I'm from the south east in Victoria, it's a great state for deer hunting.

I had thought fallow, but the antlers made me think maybe Roe.  Congrats again.  Any sika down there?  I know New Zealand has a bunch, we have a wild herd of those around me here in Maryland.

No, rut here for fallow and red deer is in April. Incidentally my favourite time of the year!

This is an Alan Vaisham Australian GRRW.

He's just a one year old with his first set of spikes.

No sika here, they're over in NZ north island.

Here we have red deer, fallow, sambar, rusa, chital and my favourite hog deer (axis porcinus).

I did think that it would be nice to use, but I'd forgotten my sharpening steel. Didn't want to have to walk a mile back to my ute when it started to lose its edge so I just broke down the meat. I will try it either the next one.

We do eat them. Over the past 20 years they've released a  couple of viruses that have really knocked the populations down so they're not as readily available as they once were.

It really clobbered our rabbits in England and that was just after the war.  Even when we left in '84, healthy rabbits were Just starting to come back.

 Same disease in South Western Ontario, but seems to happen every 7 or 8 years only.

They are apparently edible, but I don't eat infected ones.

Myxo was the first released, but Calicivirus is the one that really thumped their numbers.

Trouble is Daryl, is was a man playing with nature that took bunnies to Oz in the first place.

It doesn't make these awful viruses any better though!
