Another Upper East TN rifle
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:24:51 AM »
Just finished this up for a member of the board and wanted to share.  She's got a 44" Rice barrel in .40 caliber.  "A" profile.  Chamber's Late Ketland lock that sparks like a dream.
I made all the hardware, including the double triggers.  For something a little different it has a 1853 large penny inlet into the cheekpiece.  A double patchbox.  A replacement copper thimble and poured pewter nosecap.
Thanks for looking.
Ken

Ken -- Gorgeous job. I love the coloration you've achieved, and the wood does it justice. I've been tempted to inlay an 1880s-era silver dollar in a cheekpiece, but they're just a bit large for the "carbines" I like to build. Maybe a vintage half-dollar? Worth considering. Very nice Ken!  I can really appreciate the triggers, those buggers take some time to make.  I don't want to say how long I've been working on my first set.  What did you do with the tang on this one?  Does it go over the comb?  I'd love to see pics of the tang and nose cap.

Thanks guys for the kind words.  The color is a multitude of stains and paints.  I was trying to get that aged look.  The base color is the gosh awful Orange Dangler's stain but it really brings out the curl when you stain over it and rub it back.  I had reservations about where to put the penny.  I must have taped it to the gun a dozen times and let it set overnight before I settled on the standard cheekpiece inlay.  I know having a penny inlaid is not very traditional but I really like it.

Greg,
Here's a link to more pictures.  The tang terminates at the base of the comb.  It's my lollipop with a spear point end.  I didn't post all the pictures because it takes so long for it to load for some folks.

I like it Ken!  It has a nice warm inviting color.  I like your lock molding.  Not big and wide like a lot of originals!

Marc,
Using the not so scientific method of....step on the scales without the gun, then hold the gun while on the scales it is around 7 lbs.

Jeff,
Thanks. I must correct something I said earlier. I did not make the patchbox. I think that is a TVM kit.

Ken,

The more I look at that rifle the more I like it.  It's really cool with the coin inlay, copper thimble, and the lockplate inlay??? looks cool too.  Is that a piece of bone on the lockplate?  Great Job!

Yer right Bookie, and I'm also chompin at the bit to get on the road to go pick her up.  She's gonna look fine hanging on the wall beneath your Miss Maggie, and Hershel's Hog rifle.  I'd have left last night, cept I have a Homeland security meeting on Thursday, (have to protect Northern Michigan from potential threats  by Jihadist Canadian Inuit) and Ken's out of town.  I'd normally be coming to visit over Thanksgiving, but I have a new grandson, born yesterday, and the Iowa clan is going to Southern Michigan to spoil him.  November 16th's a good day, a new grandson, and I finally get to see Miss penny.  Life is good.  I'll wait to gush over her when I see Ken.

Another great rifle Ken.  You've extended yourself on this one though, and done a super job.  The handmade hardware adds tons to the rifle's appeal.
I used a A .40 x 42" Getz barrel on a Peter Berry rifle and it weighs 6 pounds 11 oz., so your weigh in at 7 pounds sounds right on.  It makes a light and handy rifle for sure.
Beautiful rifle, and thanks for showing it off.

Thanks for the kind words gents. The lock has a brass tail. Something I copied from Master Bookout's guns. I really like it. Maybe a little none traditional but very identifying I think.   Cheers,
Ken
