I've only been able to make it to the York shoot once. The weather was miserable. I did manage to learn something about spotters.
Most of the spotters were huge. Some were simple and some were not.  Most folks were shooting somewhere between 8 to twelve inches below their spotter.
During the practice session, Shots were taken at the spotter. Of course, the groups would be way low. When it came to shooting for score the contestants would place the center of their target on the center of their practice group.
Guys that are really good at this are using hooded front sights with inserts.
They never move their spotter, they move their target. Also, they are shooting at 60 yards. Open nonadjustable rear sights. Shaders are allowed.
Don't know if you can tell, but being unable to shoot going on a month now is @#$$%&* me off.

Not sure I will get the target shot this month after all  ::)
Looks like the danged forecast was right for a change.  Could snow another day or two. The winter storm watch ends Monday noon with up to 16” which I think it has passed already. It was just getting so one could walk to the targets fairly easily through the mud.

 :(

Range looked like this the other day
These two benches are the best for 25 yards.

But it was really nice last weekend for my vintage (1900-1953) sniper/vintage military match. So I should be thankful. But it was shot from the elevated silhouette line.
Maybe it will turn really hot and rain next week like it did last year and we will get another massive, 1 day long record breaking flood on the Yellowstone?
Hey maybe its the onset of another iceage? Naw… Its just Montana weather. It would have to snow over 30” to impress me. Hope it don’t.
Ok I will stop whining now. I suspect Daryl and Taylor are laughing.

I have heard of this “sighting” method at York before. I cannot tolerate a rifle that does not shoot to point of aim. i would like to go but its quite a drive.
if they allow insert front sights this would explain large and/or odd shaped aiming points. Depending on the insert the shooter likes I suspect.
What are the winning scores at this match? Just curious..

Dan,
Here is a link that I found for the Alvin York shoot. The Hall of Fame lists winners and their winning string measure for a total of 10 shots.
https://prwarner.wixsite.com/sergent-york-shoot/page4
As I understand it. the measure is from the center of the ball to the X.

JBJ, used the “triangle sighting” method and shot my target sitting with x-sticks. This was my best one. Not sure how to score the head shot.

PK,
Really glad that you got out and gave it a go. I scored it as follows: 8, 0, Head 9, Body 8, and 0 = 25. It's a challenging target and I hope that you will get another chance to get out before March slips away from us. Thanks.

Come on now.  Someone has to beat my score.  I don't want to have to score targets next month.  :-)

Depends on Taylor, if we get out again. You're the man of the month, Marc.

Richard,
From top to bottom as posted: 19, 27 and 26. That old crow is a tough bird. Thanks for joining the shooting this month and I hope your schedule/weather will allow you another outing. March has been tough!

JB,
Last time I fired this rifle was at that Snowman match a couple of years back, and found it shooting low. My eyes have changed since I made it many moons ago!
Targets reflect this!
First target low, then put half front sight over the back, and shot High!
Thought i had it figured where to put the glimmer of silver in the back sight...and sun went in and had me hooped!
Ii really enjoyed shooting them though!
I had forgotten how much these rifles have No recoil!!
Lovely to shoot.
Thanks again to Jim for the fantastic rifle kit, and thanks again to Daryl for sending the targets!!

I'd love to try it with my old gun with a homemade barrel, but might not get a chance now.  Will see!!

The same old flint has fired another 27 shots and never a thought of a poor spark.   This lock feels so oily it feels as good as an old best.

Kind regards,
Richard.

Richard,
So glad that you had fun. That's what it's all about!  I would love to see a target(s) shot with the homemade barrel! I find those variable light conditions you mentioned are a huge challenge as I become more and more antique. However, I still find trying a lot of fun!

Good to hear from you.

JB,
I think I am in the vintage or antique class as well now!
I did shoot my first target without markers, butt here was a lot of up and down and squinting going on!

I will do my best to see if I can get time to dig out the  old homemade job.
It has a Jim Chambers early Ketland lock. rest is homemade.

It Used to shoot, so if it doesn't it must be the operator these days!

We had something around 24” snow here. Could not have the monthly club meeting at the cube house. One of those that attempted got stuck, towny tires on his pickup. Another had difficulty. I had better tires but only three of us attempted it so no meeting. I don’t think I will get the target shot. Friend up the valley is calving and had 40”.
Shoulda shot it earlier. Had one nice day but I was running a vintage military rifle match. March has been a lion all month. Got to get to the shop and make cleaning rod handles. Order order steel and bearings….
Would not believe what I did yesterday. It involved a one of those brass suppository things belonging to friend. The things I do for my friends.
Suppose to snow some more. Life North of the 45th parallel.  Hope all the California imports are enjoying it.

Dan,
We understand. It has been a tough month for a bunch of folks. I think we have about 10 participants for the March postal. I keep hoping that we'll pick up one or two more but we are getting down to the wire. Oh well, we can all hope for a nice April and, hopefully, more shooting time.
Take care.

I have a few targets printed but we keep getting snow and rain making things an utter mess and then wind when its relatively dry. I may still get out and shoot the targets this weekend for fun if the weather is decent. I was looking forward to trying this one out after not shooting much at all since fall.

Thank you for posting that target Daryl.
No wheel spinner but I did shoot at it!
Of course, rush.
Wrong powder (it likes 3F )wrong measure, wrong patching.
Patching was only 12 thou! Checked it just now. It likes 20 thou.
I thought it was .018 like I told Daryl.
Ah well, another day coming!

I'm going to shoot this match by hook or by crook !  Tomorrow morning we are supposed to have a wee break in the bad weather.  Snow with 60 mile/hr winds today, and then around 6:00 PM the wind dropped, the sun poked out, and the temp started dropping. Going to minus 21 tonight.  The weather is certainly strange, but is giving us some real moments of absolute beauty !

Richard and Daryl,
Thanks  Daryl for posting Richard's newest target. Richard, I make it as follows, left to right: 8, 8, head 0, body (since both shots are 8, I scored an 8), and a final 8 for a total of 32. That is a better score than before  despite you not having key components sorted out. I'll wager than when you feed that rifle what it likes, it would eat that crow up! Thanks for additional effort.
