I just finished this for a customer who was a great help along the way with references and pictures. It was certainly an interesting project. it is a Scottish musket, probably from the late 1600's to early 1700's. The stock is one of Ron Scotts English walnut blanks, which measure 74 inches long when I got it. The barrel was made by Bobby Hoyt to customer specifications. It is 48 inches long and 10 ga, .775 cal. Interestingly, the octagonal portion of the barrel is not symmetrical, the barrel is much taller than it is wide. I bet that gave Bobby a headache or 2. LOTS of draw filing and polishing to get the transition area correct. The lock is scratch built with a few TRS parts from their English Carbine Snaphaunce #579. The Scots made more gradual changes to the snaphaunce mechanism, the cock is more like what we think of as a traditional flint cock. I retained the sliding pan cover because... well I think it is cool. later examples seem to have the one piece frizzen/pan cover we are familiar with
The rear sight has an interesting shape and placement
The wrist area looks clumsy but it handles extremely will in practice.
Interesting for what is essentially a musket, it has both front and rear sights
