Just a little bit different
« on: March 03, 2023, 11:58:36 PM »
I just finished this for a customer who was a great help along the way with references and pictures. It was certainly an interesting project. it is a Scottish musket, probably from the late 1600's to early 1700's. The stock is one of Ron Scotts English walnut blanks, which measure 74 inches long when I got it. The barrel was made by Bobby Hoyt to customer specifications. It is 48 inches long and 10 ga, .775 cal. Interestingly, the octagonal portion of the barrel is not symmetrical, the barrel is much taller than it is wide. I bet that gave Bobby a headache or 2. LOTS of draw filing and polishing to get the transition area correct. The lock is scratch built with a few TRS parts from their English Carbine Snaphaunce #579. The Scots made more gradual changes to the snaphaunce mechanism, the cock is more like what we think of as a traditional flint cock. I retained the sliding pan cover because... well I think it is cool. later examples seem to have the one piece frizzen/pan cover we are familiar with

The rear sight has an interesting shape and placement

The wrist area looks clumsy but it handles extremely will in practice.

Interesting for what is essentially a musket, it has both front and rear sights

Close up of the lock plate shape. The unusual banana shape is distinctive on Scottish guns

No C or S scrolls here

Off side is plain and simple as befits the Scots

Triggerguards are obviously only for men not fit to compete in the caber or heavy stone toss. Oddly this was one of the more difficult things to figure out. With the double sear arrangement of the lock, the trigger needed to pivot forward to trip the sear. It took me months of head scratching, then last year at Friendship, I sat down with Dan Kindig and together we figured it out. It pivots below the lock, not above it like I am used to with other horizontal sears I am used too. So simple but I couldn't figure it out

Overall view.
I have a direct ancestor who came to America with Fraser's 78th Highlanders. For some reason, when I worked on this and had the pipes playing in my shop I had an irresistible desire to go fight someone the English. Still didn't want to eat any haggis though

Well, I have absolutely no insight into its origins beyond your descriptions, but it certainly looks very well-made.

Nice job,

It's a very handsome piece, and obviously quite well done. Our Scots ancestors would be proud!

That is a very cool gun. No T-guard, does the trigger unscrew?

Like Jeff stated, I too have very limited knowledge of these arms, but I think I can spot quality workmanship when I see it, and this definitely fits the bill.  Really nice build and cool project!!  Best,

No, the trigger was turned on a lathe to shape, then the part that would trip the sear was ground/filed flat and pinned to the stock.

This was a build for a customer who is interested in the Jacobite Rebellion era. We were able to get some fairly good pictures from the Museum in Edinburgh. very grateful for that information but with them not being builders, I sure wish they had sent some more closeups. My suggestion they send one over for me to study personally fell on deaf ears. The research was harder and more time consuming than the build. Once I figured things out, it was actually a pretty simple build. The lock took up most of my time obviously. The dimensions as far as the stock shape are pretty much the same as any musket of the era, getting the shape of the buttstock correct wasn't too difficult, I just approached it slowly, so as not to mess up this gorgeous piece of walnut.
There are very few of these pieces still in existence as someone pointed out, after the Battle of Colluden, most were destroyed.

I'll tell you what, your work is impressive and your approach to figuring this out is equally impressive. Great job
