Hawken Build
« on: March 04, 2023, 05:53:40 PM »
It's mostly done, not done with the finishing all the way yet. This is my first rifle that I am bringing to completion. It is not without it's flaws.
Disregard the finish issues at this point, they are being addressed

Nice work!  I like it. Anyone's first builds have "mistakes". And some can be fixed very well....and some can't. But, I like your rifle. If you build again, you will get better!

My first pistol and first rifle have a multitude of mistakes. But to a novice, the gun looks great!!  To the builders on here......they were there once too!!

The  revered relics that your gun represents are no better IMHO,only OLDER. The only way to learn is to DO and don't worry about some self styled Xpurt criticizing it.Take it out, load it and touch the front trigger and enjoy it.There are those on this forum that can take $500 worth of parts and make the best $100 rifle ever seen but they enjoyed the experience as I did.I lay no claims to being a gun MAKER and did what I knew HOW to do (finally) and offered locks and triggers that were rejected because to lock had to be the cheapest thing on the gun but now there is a more affluent market and that's a good thing.Getting back to your Hawken type gun,Tom Dawson made exact copies that could pass as originals before anyone ever thought of doing it and yours is better than my effort at making one.Tom also said that the best ANY of us can do is to make a representative type including himself.

Looks great. Is yours the kit that had the issue with the hammer not lining up to the nipple and bolster correctly? If so, you did a great job fixing that. It looks great and I hope to build a half stock that nice someday

It look very good to my eyes -- Is this from a kit or did you start with a plank of maple? Either way it is very nice and you should be proud of it - happy hunting!

Your trigger guard looks like it has a little extra room in it and thats a good thing when hunting.

I agree with the group, ie:  nicely built Hawken.  For the most part, you have captured the essence, and I know you'll enjoy shooting it.

Mule Brain,
Hawken looks good to me.  You are going down the same road I did.  My first build was a Hawken rifle.  To me, they are much harder to build than most rifles because of the complexity of the breech/lock area.   Hang in there, things get better with each build.  I am finishing a full stock now and it has fought me every inch of the way, but I think I have just about won the battle.  The finished product will give you a lot of satisfaction.

I have to agree with Daryl. It has the appearance of being perhaps smaller than a .50 cal. , but we must remember that to Daryl any rifle under .60 cal. is just a girly mans rodent rifle. lol.  ;D So, Mule Brain, what caliber and size barrel is this beautiful thing. Nothing to be ashamed of, there are original Hawken Plains Rifles as small as .40 cal.

The business end is a .58 Dehaas 36" barrel. Great to take it out and shoot it in the woods. It is very accurate

I'm a little curious what feature's of this 58 cal. rifle make it look of small cal.   :-\  ;D ;)   I have had 4 of Mark DeHass's barrels and all were very accurate.

Ahh, thin walled .58. It should be a delight to carry and shoot. Nice wide grooves - should be a good one.

The buffalo I shot with my 58 caliber Hawken must have overlooked the "girleyman" thing while he was kicking his hooves in the air?  Time to have fun with your new rifle.

Jeff,
I don't think the buffalo died from the ball.
I think he was kicking his feet because he laughed himself to death. lol   ;)

Just to keep the record straight, I said nothing about a 58 being a girly-man calibre. ;)
This lass is shooting a full stocked, Hawken in .58 with an 1" bl. 26" long. It's her Mom's rifle.
Thus, I think a .58 Hawken, at least in full stock fashion, might be a Lady's rifle. Her father, now departed, used to shoot a .54 Hawken.
He built both.
