Penna Dutch Powder Horn
« on: March 03, 2023, 06:49:26 PM »
I just finished Powder Horn in a Pennsylvania-Dutch style, using colored inks inside etched lines and pictures.

Hello Bob. It's certainly a great looking horn. But the inscription gott und Land is German?

Thanks- yes the inscription is in German. "God and Land".
It's Pennsylvanis Dutch-ish.

That is a whole lot of eye candy and a horn I would be proud to carry.
I believe there is a good reason the inscription is in German.  We frequently see references to the Pennsylvania Dutch.  I believe Pennsylvania Deutsch ( Pennsylvania German) is more correct.  They immigrated from Germany to escape religious persecution in Europe.  Deutsch was gradually corrupted to Dutch.
That does not detract in any way from this gorgeous horn.

Bluenoser:  thanks for your explanation of the term Pennsylvania/Dutch...I've been confused by that for a long time, and suspected just as you have written.

Thanks again everyone. I hope to do more like this one with the fun, folk-art motifs and colors.
Flatsguide, the colors are waterproof India Ink and they seem as permanent as standard Black Ink. I tested some on a spare piece of horn and they seem very stable. In addition, all my decorative work is engraved into the horn, not just applied to the surface, so the colors are in the  inscribed lines so they won't wear away. Paste wax is applied and seals it pretty well.
Thanks for asking !
