Type G trade gun

This is a response to Rich’s post about our early guns built from a blank. I’ve only done a few in relation to the number of precarved guns I’ve built including guns precarved from my own patterns. Some years ago I fell in love with the Bumford gun at Williamsburg. Had to have one so I built it.

Very nice. What is the wood type? To my untrained eye it looks too light to be walnut but doesn’t look like maple to me either?

Looks like it would be a great shooting gun with the fairly straight comb and good comb height. Nicely done.

Abby is my shadow, she’s a hundred pound Velcro dog. Newly-Doodle. She’s a pup in that picture, she’s 3 now.The gun is stocked in the plainest piece of maple I could obtain. Should have been beech or walnut to be more PC. 28 bore Ed Rayl custom barrel 48 inch, Davis lock. Engraving such as it is, is by me also. Hardware is all formed sheet brass. Butplate nailed on. About 6.5 lb. shoots a round ball well. I usually hold my own against the rifle guys on our clubs woods walk. Paper is another story. I’m still fooling around trying to find a combo for shot. BJH
