My Kibler Colonial Rifle is completed
« on: March 15, 2023, 06:13:00 AM »
I finally got everything put together today. I am very happy with the way everything turned out. It was my first build so I did make some mistakes but I guess it just makes it mine. Anyway, I thought I would post some pics of it finished. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement along the way. I learned a lot and my next one will turn out better. I am planning on using this rifle for some colonial period reenacting so I didn't give it a ton of aging. My goal was to make it look like a 15 year old rifle that was taken care of when you know your survival counted on it. I would also like to do some black powder shoots with it.

Thanks Martin! I am guessing when you say finishing schedule you are not talking about how long it took due to life interrupting my build. It did take a while due to learning along the way. The carving although simple was the biggest delay. Anyway, to finish I applied iron nitrate, let it dry for 45 minutes or so then warmed it up with a heat gun. That was a learning experience all by itself. I did two coats with the iron nitrate. Then I used Tried and True oil for the finish. I put 7 coats on it and the waiting between coats for it to dry seemed like forever. I used a grey scotchbrite pad to apply the early coats then switched to a piece of soft cloth for the last few just to carry less oil to the wood. I did burnish between coats with a piece of wood dowel. That really made it smooth and shiny. It was actually too shiny when I was done for what I was after. I knocked it back with a light buff of grey scotchbrite and buffed with a soft clothe. I hope that is what you where after.

Yes, exactly what I needed.

Did you use the T&T Varnish oil, or original linseed oil?  I am guessing the varnish oil.

Thank you!

Very nicely executed.

Thank you everyone! It was a lot of fun to build and I learned so much while doing it. I made my share of mistakes but I learned from them. I can't wait to get out and shoot it. This was my first build but definitely not my last.

Thanks Jim! Thank you for making these great rifles available. I have watched all your videos and then applied what you said while working on mine. Your kind comment means a lot. Thanks again.
