Dickert style build
« on: March 15, 2023, 10:23:42 AM »
I am going to the NMRLA workshop in Bowling Green.

I am collecting all I need for a Dickert style rifle.

I have the Isaac Haines plan from Track, and most of the parts from them as well.

David Rase has already done a fantastic job inletting the barrel for me.

I would like it to be as historically correct as I can, but I have no illusions about building a show winner.  I just want a functional rifle that my kids won't be ashamed to inherit.

I would like to be able to hunt with it and harvest deer.

I realize the Isaac Haines plan is not a true Dickert, but is it close enough?

Is there another plan that I could purchase (and where) that might be more authentic?

I have perused the older threads, but the ones without pics are frustrating.

My reason for selecting a Dickert is primarily because my ancestors go back to the Lancaster area of PA before the Rev. war.

Also, there was a "Dickert" style rifle found at the Alamo, and while I know it is disputed, I like that part of history as well.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

Dickert built rifles over quite a long span. I’m guessing you will be going for a 1770s-1780s era Dickert with a daisy patchbox?
I always make my own plans, choosing a particular original as my guide. I find that unless I’m using the exact barrel, lock, and buttplate as the original, any plan one could buy would have to be modified anyway. But, a good plan can sure help. Unless you’re re-creating a specific original, a set of plans for an Isaac Haines rifle will serve you well.

Use a different buttplate than the currently sold "Haines". You'd be much better off if you drew out your own pattern around the parts you are going to use.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

If you are going to the seminar to build a Dickert style rifle, most of these questions should be directed to the instructor.  Am I missing something?

The seminar is for a pistol, or "finish what you have started", not a Dickert per se.

Talked to Jack this afternoon, and he is going to fix me up with what I need.

He said he taught a Dickert class about 20 years ago, and still had plans and some parts.
