Fowler rear sight inquiry
« on: March 20, 2023, 05:15:04 PM »
I would like to see examples of rear sights on fowlers. I am more interested in different versions of the "Tang raised bump with slot" style.

My intention is to raise my rear sighting slot a bit to slightly bring up my point of impact. My front sight is already barely sticking above the barrel which leaves me raising the rear sighting slot. So....I would like to see how others have accomplished this and the different design ideas that may be out there.

I performed a search but did not find very many examples.
Thanks,
Dan

Bend your barrel.

Thanks Mike. Bending the barrel may be the answer to this situation. However, I am not inclined to bend the barrel unless other (simpler to me) options are considered. Currently, the fowler shoots great and straight. I would like to tip up the point of impact a small amount. Presently, I do not intend to do anything until Turkey season is over 'cause I know where she is shooting.

SO...at this time I am interested in other peoples' fowler/smoothbore rear sight creations.

Thanks again,
Dan

Thanks Dave.

That is the type of simple rear sight application that I have been thinking about. I will need to raise a hump on my existing tang with brass or other method to allow the filing of a slot which will be higher that my existing tang/slot. I have seen other interesting creations some fancy and some simple  but cannot seem to find them now.

Thanks again,
Dan

I could shoot flying with the above sight. I can't with a standard rifle sight.

I don't think a rear sight would bother me, shooting flying. I see a ghost of the front of the barrel and with caplock or modern, I slap the trigger as the ghost touches the 'mark'. With the flinter,
I pass the "mark' by a foot before slapping the trigger. That seems to give me the proper lead. Must have something to do with the passing speed. ;)

I put a lolly pop sight on my fowler. The hole is large enough it doesn’t interfere with shot gun shooting.

Slick!  That's what I'd call a 'well designed afterthought'. Quip intended as a compliment.
