a Horn

Sometimes I take a break from gunmaking and sniff some horn dust, my other project.

Very nice! The spout is really sweet. I guess the base plug and strap holes will be done next?

Very nice work. How did you undercut the scallops or is that an optical illusion?
Thanks,

Interesting and appealing spout architecture. I like it a lot! Sniff some more horn dust and post more pictures, please.

I have been building guns for several months and your post reminds me that I need to get back to horn work. Thanks for the reminder.

You guys are too kind, I am happy that you like it. I am very new to horn making, this is the first one. I had been thinking about it for years and looking at pictures. The spout inspiration comes from an original horn with a similar spout.
TCA the scalops are not undercut, but did think about it, but they would probably chip or split easier there then, I thought.
Exept for hack saw and files the only tools I used was a rounded file scraper and a small chisel made from a 1/8" lathe bit with every corner sharpend to be used as a scraper. I will try some scrimshaw on it, got to figure out how to and a tool that works for me.

Bob, I have a white pine plug ready to go in, but I will scratch a picture on it first and probably do the holes last.

Your doing very good work.  And my compliments on a well worked tip! The tips on horns are what separate the good ones from the average ones, in my opinion. Well done horns should have tips that flow down to a narrow spout.  I try to work mine down with the goal in the back of my mind being “can the user easily prime the pan from this horn, if they want to/need to”.  Plus a well designed narrow tip will make any horn look much much better.  In addition, I like a tip design that will hold the strap securely in all kinds of situations. The tip on your horn accomplishes all that, and more - excellent job! 👍✅

Thats beautiful work. Is the throat work your design or patterned after an original?

The scalloped part I saw on an original, I will see if I can find the picture. The rest comes from my imagination.
