Dog Leg chisel source?
« on: March 25, 2023, 02:53:05 PM »
Where can I buy a good quality dog leg chisel?  Is the Flexcut brand any good?

I was hoping Pfeil had them, but I can't find one by them.

Looking to use for inletting.

Thanks!

Martin

Track of the Wolf has some. Cannot speak to quality only because I’ve not used them.  https://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/1031/1

Those two brands you mention are good quality but I don't know if they make dog leg styles   :-\

Pfeil calls them Drake chisels, but they’ve been out of stock everywhere for the last couple years. I have the left hand cut one, but I’ve been looking for the straight cut for awhile now and have had no luck.

I have a Pfeil dogleg chisel that I have had for at least two years, it sits on my bench pretty much unused. PM me if your interested in buying it.

It's not too difficult to make one, or else have someone do it for you.

That's what I was thinking.I see the now National across the country logo "Out of Stock"in the TOW ad for these chisels.I think a common screw drive could be altered and made into such a chisel.

Most of the older farmers around here make most of their stuff.  The only thing different about the dogleg chisel is the bend. Anyone with a torch could do that in 2 minutes.

Woodcraft has some. They have both Wood River bent paring chisels and Ramuelson dog leg chisels. I have used both and am happy with them. They are easy to make though. I always grab any good quality chisels if I see them at flea markets or garage sales. If I need to make a dog leg of a specific shape, wrap the cutting edge in a wet rag, and using an acetylene torch, heat the area I want the bend and using pliers or vise grips bend away. A propane or Mapp torch often takes too long to heat up to bending temp which can screw up the temper of the cutting edge.
