what style is the Pedersoli Frontier rifle?
« on: April 08, 2023, 10:10:28 PM »
I saw one of the Pedersoli Frontier rifles unfinished for sale in an upcoming auction.
I thought if the price was right I could rework it into a decent rifle.
I'd add a patchbox, proper thimbles, some lock molding, inlet the triggerguard, remove a lot of wood etc...
What style do you think these approximate? I thought Lehigh maybe. thanks

I think it has some similarities with the Killdeer rifle from Last of the Mohicans.

Without a doubt,Southern Italy.Maybe an entry level gun and that would depend on the lock.

I have seen too many have issues with the lock, and  personally, I'm not a fan of the breach design.  A lot depends on the price, and how much time /work you are willing to put into it. Around here, those rifles aren't inexpensive, running around the $1000 mark .

If I remember right the Pedersoli Frontier Rifle is a version of the "famous" Hatfield  rifle produced in St. Joseph  in the 1970ies.

I'm hoping to pick it up for $300-$400. I figure I could do a few days of work and make a decent rifle for someone.

Yah, No, well, maybe for that money - if the lock works? Purty thick in the forend. Sights WAY too high.
Looks like a piece of ash, but could be wallynut.
I don't think I've even seen one of those since the 70's.

Yeah, I'd definitely change out the sights and remove like half the forend wood. They use American walnut for the stocks.

Can you remove the fore end wood based on the web/ramrod channel? Honest question, not implying I know.

I always thought they (and the Hatfields) were something you would get if an Allentown and a S Mountain rifle had a kid together.  😀😁.  They are a little quirky looking, but not unappealing.  Not really like any original school. The fore-end definitely needs to go on a major diet - and be slimmed down from the front of the lock panels all the way out ti the barrel tip.  A muzzle cap wouldn’t hurt anything either, but not a must have.  If I recall, the trigger guard seems ti ride slightly high off the surface also, and would benefit from a little deeper inletting.  And the finish stripped and redone in an oil finish.  If you got it reasonable, it could be worth a little effort.  I think they can be improved upon and made more desirable for a resale, with minimal effort.

I reworked one.  I got it for free.  I  Reshape the stock, normal ramrod pipes with entry pipe, forend tip, replacement lock, bored out breech plug, opened up touch hole, and added a patch box.   In the end I flipped it.  The butt stock was just to weird for me.  The butt plate is tiny there is no comb.    The trigger guard sits on top of the wood, which also bothers me.

I put it in the same category as TC , CVA and other price point guns that do not respect traditional construction methods or architecture.  In hindsight I could have saved a lot of time and left it alone.  I could have given it to someone who might have had fun with it.

If you intend to shoot it you will want to open up the powder chamber in the plug.  They use a super long plug with a long thin powder chamber.  That design kills reliability.

IF you can get it cheap it may have entertainment value.

It ended up going for $475 USD plus 20% commission and shipping, plus duties. I decided not to get it. I'll keep an eye out for one another time maybe.
