Muzzleloader rack
« on: April 21, 2023, 06:43:17 PM »
My other recent project is a gun rack which I've needed for a long time. It's built of scrap hickory and walnut that I've had . I'll put some finish on it soon to seal it. Tricky part was the base where the butts land. It's angled at 15 degrees which is an average of the angles for the rifles . The walnut rack sits atop the base to keep them in place.

Daryl, are you sure you’re talking about guns?

Daryl, are you sure you’re talking about guns?

Most of the time, that's the case, anymore! ;D  But - I am not disinclined to look at other racks, as the opportunity arises. ::)

Is this simply a display rack or do you intend to store your rifles on it?  I store my rifles inverted, that is to say, muzzles down.  Otherwise, over time, oil in the barrel migrates to the breech plug and causes two problems, ie:  the oil turns to varnish sludge and interferes with ignition, and secondly, oil runs out of the vent into the wood around the breech and lock and ruins the wood.  Just look at any old Winchester for evidence of this wood deterioration.
The rack in my lock-up has large notches cut into a 2 x 4 to support the butt stocks between the lock and the buttplate, and the muzzles rest on a 2 x 6 on the floor. There is no need to install dividers for the muzzles, though one certainly could.

Need a picture?

Very nicely done.

Like D. Taylor Sapergia, I store all my long-guns, modern and muzzleloading, muzzle down,,, but,,, I really like that design. Might think about a smaller version for use at the range.

I like your rack and it looks to have good craftsmanship in its construction.  There is one problem that I noticed right off. You need at least two more guns.
