I have not been very good about posting images of my builds. Trying to get better at it. Here is my current project which is a .54 Smoothrifle

Looking good, Cory Joe, I like the architecture.  Any particular school, or original rifle inspiration?   Best,

Cory,
Great work and the neatest workbench I have seen in a long time! Bet you could even find a fly if you dropped it on that bench! Seriously, great job and photos of your build steps. Please keep up the good work and keep posting as you progress along the build. Thanks and good luck!

Nice to see the wood getting chewed off until the 'piece' starts looking like a gun. :) Very nice.

Liked the photos. Never thought of using a dovetail saw for the cheek piece. I always use a #93 Stanley rebate plane. Might try starting the line with the saw next time.
Don't think I could work in such a clean shop. At least I never have.

Nice work! I was suprised to see someone else use a saw to cut in a cheek piece. I just take it for granted. I don't recall seeing it in the how-to books.

I saw  back-saw being used. I don't think I've ever seen a dovetail saw. The term is not common to me.

Interesting build, and looking forward to see more.  And as a side note to Daryl, I've used the same type of saw similarly, and only known it referred to as a dovetail saw.  Being brass backed, it is a "back saw" generally speaking, but specifically designed for cutting small, typical drawer dovetails, with its thin blade and fine, lightly set rip teeth.  Now that I think of it, I remember old catalogs calling it a "gentleman's saw".  Anyway Daryl, that is my understanding as a carpenter down here in Ohio.

I have seen back saw, dovetail saw and gentlemans saw to all refer to the same thing. I bought this to cut dovetails when I was taking woodworking classes in college.

Built only one early Virginia and this one has the very thick buttstock.  Have a slight regret that the hardware isn't brass.....Fred

Thanks for these pics!  I love watching these things come together, but I'd have to throw a bucket of rusty tools and other unfinished projects on the bench before I started thinking about working on a gun!

It is nice. When I eventually build a shop.(if I ever get too) that will be a major focus.

Indeed that natural light looks great. I came close to bulldozing out one side of the basement last year to add egress windows before my spouse convinced me it wasn't a great idea.

I really like that style patchbox - I've seen it on other rifles and it is very intriguing so I'm looking forward to seeing how this comes together.
