Building 4 Bore Rifle #2
« on: April 23, 2023, 01:22:31 AM »
I am starting a new project and doing a series of videos building it. I built a 4 bore rifle for myself a little while ago and it turned out nice. Shooting it is a lot of fun. I decided to build another one. This one will go up for sale when it is finished. I got kicked off You Tube a while ago because I am "dangerous to the community" so the videos will be on Rumble and will be available for download on Patreon. A new video gets posted to Rumble every weekend until it is finished but I put the videos on Patreon as soon as I finish the editing. Here is the first one.

Gonna be one helluva rifle Bill. I'll be watching this close. Beautiful choice of wood for the stock. But $100 for a square black stick?

Yes, I did write a book. It's called The Classic English Double Barrel Click the little globe between my profile and e-mail link to check it out.

At a boy!

Sometime we need to get together so I can watch you shoot the other 4 bore.

Actually it was over $200, but I used half of it for another ramrod. Ebony is REALLY expensive. It makes really nice ramrods.

I was actually in Indiana for a few days two weeks ago. But I was in Gary and did not have any free time. That city is a real dump. Cannot image how anyone can live there. Maybe I will get a chance to stop by this summer. Don't know.

Every time I do a series of videos I get a bunch of questions about tools. So I did a video just about the tools for building a gun. Of course each person will have entirely different opinions about tools. This is just what works for me.

What did you settle on for the wrist width in this next build? I seem to remember the first 4-bore was unusually wide - something like 1-3/4 at the narrowest.

The wrist will really thick on this one also. It needs to be. But it will be proportional to the rest of t he gun. Barrel  1 3/4 inch at the breech. Recoil on this thing is enormous. Nearly every part of the gun has to be designed to deal with it.

If you are still adapting the Purdey design, I believe that had a 1.17 inch breech and a 1.2 inch wrist. Which I guess means that proportionally the wrist width would be approximately the same as the breech (1-3/4” in your case).

Truly enjoy watching the build videos even though I have no intentions of building a firearm that shoots a 4-ounce chunk of lead.  Bill consistently shows interesting builds, taking his time to ensure a nice result.

The next project will be a bit different also. Not sure if it will be suitable for posting here or not.
