Couple things, Bill.  Use a constant, consistent feed, no starting/stopping.  While watching, I noticed that each time the drill stopped, it was leaving the flatter side away from the blade.

Was also thinking that you might be better spinning the rod against something like 16-grit paper cupped in one hand; that would certainly avoid the chunking of that single blade on the dowel-making tool.

You alluded to a pencil sharpener, but they have two opposing cutter blades.

Kind of relegated to sitting and watching any more.

I definitely need to figure out something better for the next one. Ebony is fairly tough to work with.

Bill, totally envious of both your engraving setup and your abilities with the artwork.
My attempts with hammer and graver have convinced me to farm out this aspect of gun building.
Thanks for taking us along on your gun building projects.

That Airgraver really is amazing. Now I just need to cough up the money to get a decent microscope. The surgical loupes work nice but sometimes it is still tough to see what I am doing.

After you draw your design pattern, hold your object out at arms length and spray ,mist, fog it with cheap hair spray.
Acts like a clear coat you won't smear it, and comes off with soapy water. Easy peasy.

Good idea! I will have to try that next time I do engraving.

Truly make me look forward to Saturdays!

You are coming along well with your engraving techniques.

Bill, your engraving IS improving!  And yeah, drawing the design on the metal is a large part.

I can do neither the drawing or the actual metal cutting.  Just lack the ability.  Some of it is the nerve damage, but a big part is the inability to create a comprehensive design.  I can do an adequate job with wood, but with metal?  Naah!  Ain't happening.

Saturday mornings, I'm about like an 8-year-old kid waiting for the cartoons - many thanks!

Good thing you like watching the engraving. There is a LOT more of it coming. I got totally carried away with it on this one. It was fun!

Thanks!  Don't fret those very minor errors - they are proof that it wasn't done by AI!

I agree. I prefer mediocre hand engraving over perfect computer engraving every time.
