Two Large
« on: May 05, 2023, 04:48:41 AM »
Rolled the dice on an auction a couple of weeks ago and won Two Large.  That is two Bill Large barreled rifles! The top one is a .32 and the bottom one is a .54. Both are fitted with percussion locks by LONG'S LOCKS, DENVER. The barrels have the W.M. LARGE with JJJJ over L stamps. The .32 also has TIGHT STUFH (Typo?). Will take barrels off tomorrow and see if any builder information on underside.

The top rifle is beautiful! I’d like to hear more about that one.

Bores are great. The .54 was dusty, but wiped clean. No other markings on guns under barrels. Mystery builder. Inletting is excellent.  I was worried about getting tang out. My heart has been broken before .

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Gasp! 😆 You are probably right, but they seem to have a certain cachet, for some reason.

Large barrels were, & still are, good barrels & they take me back to my early days in muzzleloading & all the good old men who brought me up in the sport. There is value in nostalgia for me.

The Long's locks were a better find than the barrels.

Can you tell me more about them?

Other than the nostalgia factor, I agree with Mike.  The locks are well made, short stroke locks.    The triggers might also be Long's triggers.

I had a H. House gun with a Large barrel and a Roller lock. I was really something when I owned that! ;D The Roller lock was dated 1972. I should have kept that gun. I say that about all the guns I have sold. ::)

The only thing worse than buyers remorse is sellers remorse.  I have suffered both many times.  I am an expert at remorse.

Sometimes They Come Back,  but not like in that creepy Stephen King story of the same name.  I have owned the same rolling block rifle three times. Bought from importer. Sold. Bought on Gunbroker.  Sold. Bought out of an estate. Holding pat for now. I'm superstitious.

Well, you know what they say about the 3rd time.
Best wishes. ;)
I did that with a rifle once, owning it twice, that is, then rebarreled it & got lucky that that one.
