Peggy gets her first Tom
« on: May 24, 2023, 02:45:03 PM »
My .69 smoothbore is called Peggy because the buttstock has some large wood repairs glued and pegged. Last year Peggy got a jake in the spring and a hen in the fall. This morning, her first gobbler. 17 yards after a stalk. 19.5 pounds. No more getting up at 4 AM!

Nice tom and cool smoothbore, it's honest with the repairs and pegs and I like that there's no big attempt to hide it while still matching the grain flow as well as possible etc.

Thanks! When I was working on it my good friend Tom Curran (known as Acer saccharum here), who recently passed away, told me, “Don’t be skeered!”  He reminded me of the glued and pegged additions or repairs present on RCA 17 and another early rifle known as “Doc’s rifle”.

Excellent!!! Congratulations.
I wish I could get up as late as 04:00 to turkey hunt. To be where I need to be before a half hour before sunrise, I have to get up at like 02:30 ☹️

Well done, congratulations again.

Very nice job Rich! That's next with my smoothbore is a gobbler.

I've shot several deer with it including a doe and a button buck with two shots about a minute apart! They kidded me at the club house about 2 deer in less than 2 minutes and stayed drunk for 2 days!

Good job there!

Yes, amazingly good reload time for sure, but easily accomplished with paper ctgs.

Very nice! What was the flavor like on those birds? I’ve never tasted wild turkey (excepting the bottled kind).

Flavor is very similar to domestic turkey but can be tough sometimes. I marinate in chopped tomatoes for 2 days in fridge and it’s tender as can be.
