Gillespie/Southern Rifle V Shaped Forearm
« on: June 09, 2023, 03:55:48 PM »
Probably been answered before, but I searched the topic and it seems most of the older pics have gone on to photobucket heaven.
On the rifles with V forearms, particularly the first two in Dennis’s Gillespie book, is the V forearm shape like my crude drawing? Kind of hard to tell in photos, but it appears to be concave towards the bottom rather than a true V shape, almost like the finger grooves in more modern unmentionable rifle forearms.

If you post the thread/threads you are trying to get the Pix on we can see if they can be fixed. They will still have the "Photo Bucket" logo across them but you should still be able to see a good bit of them.

This is where I’m at now in the rough shaping. Just trying to figure out if it should be concave along the ramrod hole or just stop now and call it good.

On the Gillespie that I built, the “V” shape continued all the way down to the ramrod.  I left about 2/3 of the ramrod exposed.  There was no concave area.

Here are 3 pictures from my Mathew Gillespie "Tribute Rifle" that is very close to a bench copy of the Mathew Gillespie rifle shown on pages 20 and 21 of the book "The Gillespie Gunmakers of East Fork NC by Dennis Glazener. It was made for me by Don Bruton. Hope these poor quality photos show what you are looking for.

Thank Mike, those photos help a lot. Looks like I have some shaping to do on the entry hole.
