Making a base for a lolly pop peep sight
« on: June 21, 2023, 10:19:22 PM »
I have only one base i have made in the past and this is my second. My firsr i made as a saddle crossing over the slender hawken tang and silver soldered in place. This is differnt in that the smith had notched the tang for the base and i thought to dove tail it in place. Here is what i have so far. I will need to lower it to bring the bullet placement on target at 100-150 yds shootng this weekend will tell.⁶

Randy Gruenkemeyer makes a dandy folding peep sight and he lives in Indiana but I forget where.
Maybe someone can expand this incomplete recommendation.

I've only done one.  It is on a pistol grip Hawken rifle.  I made the base from a piece of key stock and silver soldered it to the tang, then sawed and filed the base to the contour I wanted.  The staff and tang hole is threaded 1/4 x 80 tpi (much thanks to Bob Roller for the tap and die).  The only disadvantage was I couldn't pack harden the tang because of the silver solder joint.  But as far as function is concerned, it was excellent.

Those are great assistance to poor eyesight.  I wouldn't mind to have one on one of my hunting rifles. Just need to figure out which one to go after. These pics are helpful providing ideas.
