Simple and to the point
« on: June 29, 2023, 12:51:51 PM »
I was asked by a good friend to quickly put together a rifle for an upcoming event. I got asked in mid May, maybe late May. He supplied a n old Douglas barrel, a Chambers late ketland lock and a stock. I took care of the rest. The stock had issues right off, it had bug holes and was soft in some parts and hard in others. This had to be finished by August 1st. I did a 'down n dirty' approach and kept it as simple as I could. No butplate, no cheek piece. Filled the bug holes. No nose cap and simple thimbles. Brian Barker made the guard from one that I own, sent it to him and he cranked out the guard.  I cutt off 2 inches from the barrel. Brian did a fantastic job on the guard, without his talent and effort I could not have done this. This is the result

It's a 45, planning on shooting it Saturday, make sure it goes boom and functions correctly. This is a working man's gun

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

It looks to me as a nice gun with nice lines. A testament to actual " gunsmithing " and what can be done when a effort is applied. Nice work Gaeckle.

A real testament to the fact that a really artful gun does not require a lot of “bling”…nicely done.

Nice!
Reminds me of the thread from a while back on the "workman like" quickly built guns. There were some really fine examples shown on that one too.

Very nice gun.  Love the way it turned out.  Sometimes the ones we have issues with turn out to be our favorites. Brian did a great job on the guard.

That one gets a thumbs up

Well-executed plainer guns often seem to have a certain character that more ornate guns somehow lack. What is the treatment on the tail-end of the lock?

Just a piece of brass that I pinned to tail. I did it for two reasons. The first was as an immediate impact of contrast, the second was the lock (being a late ketland) has a pronounced step at the tail and with a  thin straight barrel that step would have hampered a defined lock panel, so I added the brass to raise the step to help with the lock panel. I've done this sort of thing before, it works and is pleasing to the eye....at least my eye
