whiskering ???
« on: July 08, 2023, 06:35:18 PM »
Have a fowler well on its way and have shaped and sanded the stock down to 220.
And wet wet it down and it is drying.  Now what grit next?  Won't the 220 tear up some new wood that I will whisker again, and again?
Or should I use a finer grit, or maybe scotchbrite or steel wool?
Just wanting some guidance here.  Normally I would have first went to 320 and used the same 320 between several whiskering.
But I was reading that alot of builders go only to 220 and whisker before carving.
But they don't say what they clean off the whiskers with?  At least not that I have seen.
Thanks as always.

I like Maroon Scotchbrite, #07447, for this.

For me I go to 320 then like Scota4570 I go to a maroon pad then if I am feeling up to it I will go to a gray pad ;). I also like to use 4/0 steel wool at times which some people detest ;D. I will also burnish the stock with a coarse cloth like canvas.

I use 320 between whiskering, but agree the maroon scotchbrite works good too as well as a little burnishing. I use a worn antler tine.
