Early Hawken Breech Plug Source (Found One Thanks)
« on: July 10, 2023, 07:47:44 AM »
A while back someone on this forum told us of a source of a couple early Hawken breech plugs with the straight vertical mating surface between the tang and hooked part of the breech plug.  I documented the supplier and checked with the them and they had a couple in stock at that time.  I did not purchase one at that time, and now I cannot remember the supplier or find the info.  Anyone with this info please send me a note.  Thanks.

The Griffith breech carried by the Hawken Shop may be what you need.

They had bolsters for the nipple seat welded to the barrels.A "patent breech" is another thing entirely and usually allows barrel removal with the tang still in the wood.Supposedly the half stock Hawken was inspired by the English sporting rifles that may have passed thru pre 1849
St.Louis but I can't completely accept that because of the wide quality control differences in the two guns. The Brtit is a Rolls Royce and the Hawken at best reaches Chevrolet. Both very useful but only one appeals to the quality buyers.
