Interesting Leather...powder horn?
« on: July 13, 2023, 03:49:03 PM »
First post in a while, lots of things have passed under the bridge.

Anyway, right now on an un-named major on-line auction site there is a round black leather item.  About 5.5" x 1" x 1" with a wooden plug and leather strap.  It is stitched.  I searched under..."vintage black powder horn".

Was going to post a url but not sure if it is allowed.  Some sites do not allow such.

Question.

What the heck is that?  :o

Ball bag?  Interesting "primitive" construct.  Possibly pig skin strap.  Any skuffing or color inside that might provide a hint of for use?  Nice.

That little leather case could have housed about anything, even a set of dice or small tool. It's different shape, wide mouth, and construction make me think it may have had no connection to black powder shooting, and had a different intended use.

Good follow up posts guys.

And for sure, could have been used for "anything".

Maybe one of these days will try something like it for myself.  8)

In my experience a leather powder horn is a good companion for a wicker canoe, because neither one keeps the water out. My guess is it’s either a ball bag, or a shot bag.
