i am ready to finish up the wood on a southern rifle i am building. the last stock i done i used aqua fortis, years later the wood has darkened to much for me. what other alternatives are there to bring out the stripes in the wood? any help or photos is appreciated,,,,,,,,,,,

Put on Kiblers iron nitrate.

Hi Wolf,
The darkening could be from the stain if it was not neutralized but it could also be the finish, particularly if it is a linseed oil finish.  Ferric nitrate theoretically does not need to be neutralized but I routinely do, wiping the stock with ammonia or painting it with lye water.  It cannot hurt and who knows the effects after 100 years.

thanks Dave, after 100 years i bet i won't care! LOL, on Jims's site he also said it wasn't necessary to neutralize, but i will. the stock that was a little to dark for me was finished with chambers oil. it just could have been the piece of wood too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
