So I've done a chambers New England Fowler kit and wanted a rifle. Decided this time to try a little closer to a plank build. Got a beautiful piece of wood from Allen Martin and a 46 inch .54 cal barrel from rice and sent it all to Dave keck to be inlet and had a fresh miller York profile put on it. That was in mid may just got a surprise package yesterday and it was the beginning of my project. Both really great guys to work with and I highly recommend them. The inlet was crisp with no gaps and a very flat breech area.

 Do you have all the furniture gathered up? Picking a style and gathering all the parts, to me, it's a fun part of a build.

Yes I have everything but the lock and the sights. Plan on using a chambers golden age lock and making my own sights.

Rip hand saw.

A hand rip saw works well and is an efficient tool

Get a new rip hand saw down at your local hardware store.They probably only have one so don't worry about type. What's more important is technique and how you use it.

Clamp it vertically as shown in the picture and cut a scribed line holding the saw loosely so as not to force it one side or the other.Let the saw do the work and check your progress every couple inches or so.

I've held incredible tolerances using the method I described.

I was inspired by a rifle I saw on the metropolitan museum of art site. Possibly a George shryer. While not talented enough or have the correct measurements to make a complete copy I want to make something similar in feel and look to the below picture.

Well got the breech and tang inlet. This is my second gun build. My first was a chambers New England Fowler. I'm still getting some gaps but not as bad as my first. My take some shavings off the slabs to fix it. Next will be cutting the dovetails for the barrel lugs.
