Id Barrel? PIC ADDED
« on: August 11, 2023, 08:57:24 PM »
I recently came across a Hawken style rifle built many years ago with a Robbins lock and an unmarked .54 cal l barrel. It has 10 lands and grooves, and the grooves are slightly radiused. Its not like the deep radius grooved rifling so common today, the corners of the grooves are radiused but the bottom of the grooves are still flat.  Its 1-48 twist. There are no outside makings on the barrel, does anyone know who would have made this barrel? ...Thanks LK

Interesting, would like to see a nice close photo of the rifling at the muzzle if you don't mind...

I have seen a long rifle with what I would call multi grove barrel at the Minnesota territorial matches several years ago and IIRC it was made by Jim goodeion. (sp) :-\

There is an old Dave Taylor .45 barrel for sale on Ebay that appears to meet that description and has 10 grooves.

Upon magnification the rifling does seem to be slightly radiused in the grooves but not real deep like todays radius grooved barrels

I have a barrel that is an old original hand forged one and has been re-cut to .40 with 10 grooves sometime back in the 80's or 90's.  The builder of the rifle was Arthur Huscusson in Franklin, NC.  He had the barrel re-cut, but don't know by whom.  James Levy

More than 8 grooves seems to be uncommon today.N.G.Whitmore made 12 groove barres and were declared as "unfair competition" in the days they were used. The rifle he made for General Grant after the Civil War was tested from a rest and it put 10 shots into the lid of a percussion cap tin.The one I owned was with a telescope sight and no provision for anything else and it easily could hit a small target like that every shot.I tried to talk Bill Large into making a 12 groove barrel to test but he wasn't interested.
