Inspiration came from the original William Britton. 1815 - 1825 approximant time frame for the original, Hampshire County Virginia school. Ed Rayl barrels, 36 inches long and tapered from thirteen sixths to 0.644. .40 cal. rifled and .45 cal. smooth. Allen Martin Maple bought from the forum. Thanks for the comments!

That is amazing work and I bet with 40 and 45 barrels, it is not as heavy as it looks at first. Great versatility in your planning. This must be L & R locks you used since they had to be identical left and right. I really like the way you designed and shaped the breechplug tangs. Are the barrels soldered together or inlet independently? Really interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I love the concept, and many of the innovations in the build. The part I can’t rationalize is the boulder blasted barrel ( I say boulder because of the course medium that is obviously well beyond sand) and the virtually uncarded brown barrel finish. Those rust barrels just kill the whole thing for me.

Elkhorne, yes, the barrels are independent of one another, and you're correct on the locks.

Hungry Horse, I hurried to get this completed by the time the CLA show rolled around. There were a few other things that I would have changed and taken a little more time with. The truth is I treated the barrels and hung them outside the shop and actually forgot about them for about three weeks. Not exactly what I was looking for in the finished product, but it isn't something I can't live with. It comes pretty close to what I was trying to achieve. The thing is I don't like a gun that looks like it just came out of the box. Thanks for looking.

I like the barrel finish but I would prefer the stock to be "aged" the same as the barrel. Unfortunately the last fowler I made for myself I aged the barrel but not the stock, I just could not ding it up enough to match the barrel, I keep thinking I will work on it some more but have never gotten around to it

Yes, Dennis I agree. I like the used but taken good care of look. Hopefully I'll get that right on the next one. I don't mind rubbing back the carving as much as banging up the stock. I can't hardly bring myself to do that. LOL!

LOL on “aging” the stock! I’m like homerifle said, I like a rifle or fowler that looks used but taken care of. For a “more” aged look, Jack Brooks once told our class that he built a Hawken or Leman for someone and to age it, he tied a rope or something onto it and drug it up and down a gravel driveway! I wish we could have seen that rifle after it’s “aging” process and final finishing. I also saw at a CLA meeting years go, an initially looking good Andrew Verner rifle that upon closer study, looked like they had dug it up after the rainy season in an active muddy barnyard full of livestock! The wood was dried out somewhat I believe but the barrel and lock looked very rusty with minimal cleaning! Everyone has heard of “overcooked” well it was “over aged”! In conclusion, it is fun to try to make a piece look “aged” but well taken care of. That is a challenge for any of us trying to accomplish this look. Good luck to all.

Awesome build John. I held this double in my hands at the CLA show. It is well balanced and not as heavy as you might think. The workmanship is top notch, both carving and engraving. Overall it is a well executed piece of art. Great job John!!
