Painted Hunting Pouch

This is a hunter pouch I just finished. It is a very European style with painted Crest of Rampant Stag and Horse. The bag is made of Sheepskin, with Goat Lining. The strap is Wool with brass buckle and attachment rings.

That is a lovely bag. I have some saddle leather that is just hollaring paint me, paint me. Igot to try that. Beautiful work.

Ron, Beautiful design and execution, I really like it, has a genuine old world look. Are the hides vegetable tanned? What kind of paint do you use, that gives that nice crackle, but doesn't flake off wholesale? Thank you for showing this, it certainly stirs the imagination, at least mine!

The hides are commercial tan and very supple.  The paint chosen was Acrylic. I would have prefered oil but the drying time was the deciding factor. The Aged affect was achieved with an Artists Crackle Varnish. Much of the character of the painting was the color and blending of the background. A total of maybe eight hours of time on the Flap Art.  Finding appealing themes for the Art is a challenge.

Anyone who has Art themes they are willing to share would be appreciated.

Beautiful bag Ron and thanks for the information on the leather and paint.  Have you ever used acrylic paint in this application before?  Does the acrylic paint really "stick" to the leather and does it wear well with use?

The acrylic was mixed with a additive to make it flexible (designed for fabric painting). I haven't been able to keep one long enough to tell you the durability.

 These painted bags that you do are really neat. I've been fooling around lately painting leather but not really sastified with the results. I was wondering what the name of the additive for the paint that you are using. Thanks

Beautiful pouch Ron. The entire piece has a great feel to it. The European pieces are so interesting, but I have not found a great deal of information about any of them.

The paint is acrylic.  It was mixed with Liquitex Fabric Medium which reduces stiffness and increases workability.

I just saw the bag that Dave Peelgren has when I visited him on Friday...

It is beautiful...  I am currently building a bag to present at the ALRA Western Gathering this coming fall......  You've got me thinking  :) :) :) Now it is between painting and a hair insert.... :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
