My George Schreyer

Here is my George Schreyer / Jacob Bower rifle I finished a few months ago and I have been meaning to post it. This is a copy ( Not a photographic copy) of an original that many of you may be familiar with in Shumways RCA vol. 2. The bbl is a duplicate made by Ed Rayl and is swampped, 47 7/8" long .54 cal smooth. Wallace Gussler cast the butt piece & Gaurd from the original and the lock is a Chambers. All other parts I made from sheet brass. The only thing is I decided to use curly maple instead of cherry.
I tried to build this as close as I could to where if someone picked up the original and this they would be very close. I didnt however want to beat it up and patina the stock.
Go ahead, let me know what you think.

Looks good. I'm glad you didn't beat it up. A season's shooting cleaning and just handling will help add enough character without abusing a good looking rifle. If she shoots as well as she looks you have a treasure.

Well its virgin so far because I have been shooting the one I finished after this one. Its an Abraham Schweitzer that I am really pleased with. I will post it as soon as I take some pics.

Really evokes the original, which is a great, great gun. Well done.

Thank you guys. I need to point out that I left the back ground of the carving like it is because thats how Schreyer left it. I am going to do another one and I may give it the pristine, new look. I'm not sure yet though.

Very nice shape and the carving has good flowing lines and proportions to it! I was going to suggest smoothing the background in the carving, while acknowledging many of the originals (including this one) were left this way, and you then mentioned leaving it that way on purpose. In that light, you have captured the "spirit" of the original very well!

Hi guys,
Ron, to answer your question, yes and no. Part of the mechanism is close but the push rod just wouldnt work right.
And why the heck does this page look so goofy??

Nice job on your rifle!
As for the pictures, when posting them, you need to put the pics under each other,,, instead of next to each other.

Nice job Darrin!!
Gonna have to get busy and get mine finished. Ed Rayl had another Schroyer barrel for sale at the CLA show 2 years ago to fit the rifle and it is .66 caliber, the bore size of the origional. I may swap it for the .54 caliber, sure makes the gun a lot lighter!!!
