Installing inlays on MZ stock
« on: September 04, 2023, 04:42:42 PM »
Could anyone post any links of video's showing installing an inlay from start to finish on a rifle stock. Have searched here, the MZ forum, and the web. Alot of short ones showing some aspects of it, but not one showing how to do from start to final install.

Thanks Tim. I kinda of thought out how the process may work (lacking in experience) but want to read and view as much as I can before doing an inlay. I plan on doing a few practice rounds on scrap maple wood before doing so on my Kibler SMR stock. Would like to inlay a small star on the cheek piece but have read that due to the curvature of the stock in this area is a bit trickier than on a flat area. I'm fussy and sort of a perfectionist when working on firearms so I don't want to have a spot that maybe most people wouldn't notice, but I'd know is there. Haven't started on the SMR yet but don't plan on doing a week or so slap together on it. If there are say 10 major steps to doing a successful inlay, I don't want to dive into doing an inlay and find out later I missed/didn't do #4.

Got to thinking last night that BillRaby has posted alot of video's on his builds and recalled seeing him doing some inlays. I don't know why when I did my search's they didn't come up but sometimes the cyberspace beings won't mention alot if not worded right. Anyway went to Bill's current Maryland rifle build and found on parts 59-69 he posted installing three inlays. Parts 61-63 even showed inlaying a star on the cheek piece. Very informative and instructional. Thank you Bill for all your time and effort in instructing everyone on 'how to do'. Was up late watching, early up, in low gear this morning. Have to check back on some of the other builds Bill has posted for further instruction.

I have no idea what the right way is to install inlays. The videos just show the way that I did it. You can see the videos here  https://rumble.com/c/c-913677

If you click on "Show More" in the description it will show what is in each video.

I would only add - if using a stamped inlay - modify it to make it a little unique, with sharp corners and maybe narrower rays in the star. Or 4 reduced rays against the 4 longer ones.  If cutting out your own, make it even more unique.   Slimmer star rays look better in my opinion.

And yes, You will have to match the curvature of the cheek piece. You can bend it over a piece of metal or pvc pipe of a similar radius to get close.  Or draw and cut a board on a bandsaw to match the radius, and lightly hammer for the bend.

If this forum had likes/thumbs up icons I'd stick one on yer reply Top Jaw. Question to all and everyone is I read/hear about annealing the brass (or whatever material inlay is made of). When doing so with say a propane torch, what approx temperature do you bring it to, red hot or a lesser temp.

Heat it to evenly red, and drop it in a container of water.

In case it has not been mentioned , file a slight draft around  the edge of the inlay before you start.

A few important things about inletting, and I'm sorry if it was covered somewhere else, is first you need to learn to interpret what your inletetting black is telling you. Since the goal is to make the metal look like it is growing out of the wood, without any unsightly gaps, the black will transfer to where the part is fitting perfectly as well as where wood (or metal!) needs to be removed. So you need to interpret which black to remove and which black to leave alone. A simple rule I follow is to remove all of the black at the bottom of the inlet and leave the black alone on the sides until you are no longer printing on the bottom, then determine if the sides need to be addressed. This will give you a greater margin of error since it is generally easier to fix an inlet that is too deep rather than one that is too wide. When looking at the black on the sides of an inlet, there are going to be spots that are considerably darker than others, those spots are where the metal part has pressed into the wood over and over again and are areas I would address first, prior to areas on the sides where the black is not as dark.

Next, don't underestimate simply feeling the part, it's surprising how much information you can gain through your hands just by pressing the part into the wood and feeling what it's telling you.

And finally, there are any number of ways of fixing mistakes that you won't even see when it's done. The important thing is to put the gun down, sleep on it, and come looking for an answer in the morning.
