Made a taller rear sight for my SMR
« on: September 22, 2023, 10:19:02 PM »
I’m finishing up a Cherry stocked SMR in .45 and wanted a taller rear sight. With my old eyes I needed some help and I didn’t want to file the front sight down as low as on my other SMR. I ordered a couple from Track but they didn’t arrive before I returned to my camp. So I made one today. It’s certainly higher than required, but I’ll file it down as needed when sighting it in. I’ll do some more shaping once I get the height set. I used a piece of 1/2” x 1/2” bar stock.

TDM,
Good job! Good planning to build it, sight it in and then clean up and fancy up once functional. Not sure what steel it is but I have heard of some making rear sites out of a chunk of a railroad spike. Somebody else made one out of a piece of a meteorite so there are lots of options. Please keep us posted as you work this site out and finish it.

Thanks, it’s just regular mild steel. Just a few days away from trying it out.
