I really wish I knew more about the shooter and the rifle he used to shoot this

Nice. I see 90gr. 2F was the charge he used.
My .45 GM barrel, shot best at 50 yards with 85gr. 2F GOEX or 75gr. 3F GOEX. 10 prince denim and .445 ball, of course.

5 lucky shots in a row. I should be so lucky! ;D

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

That is a great target! Would like to know the shooting position. I never heard of the guy. If it had been shot standing people would still be talking about him.

I'm figuring bench-rest or cross-sticks.

Even from a bench at 50, still amazing

Great target.  I suspect that the other bull on the target was the sighter. I would like to know what sights he was using and how heavy the rifle was. My eyes ain’t that good any more.

I had to put this in perspective, and it is amazing what kind of accuracy can be achieved with a patched round ball with a muzzleloader.
So I went to the NMLRA website to look at National records.
Not the easiest endeavor to do. They have records for the Spring and Fall shoots as separate records for the same matches.
There are quite a few perfect scores of the bench.
Al Kramer used to come down to Phoenix with his wife to shoot the Winter Nationals.  He used to shoot the local matches with us while he wintered here.
A fine gentleman. Sadly he passed away in 2020 at the age of 81.
In 2007 he set a record for match159. It is shot on a six bull 100 yard target at 100 yards. There are 6 bulls, with one being a sighter. The black is 6 inches in diameter, and the x ring is 1 inch in diameter.
AL shot a 50 5X on that target.

Yes a 50 is special, a 50-5x is real special and at 100 yds. Its almost devine. I was range officer on the bench line when Al shot that target. IIRC his rifle was well over 30 lbs with Olympic sights front and rear

Sights do make a huge difference, but those men showed exceptional talent.
