Now that's a really neat looking horn! Does "York City" mean it deviates a little from the standard York horn we normally see with decorative chip carving on plug? When you get tired of it, I'll be glad to take it off your hands!

Thanks Shelby. Cty being abbreviation of County. This horn came over the Appalachians With the Amsler family to Clarion County PA in the early 1800s and remained with its original Samuel grove rifle for over 200 years. It appears to have gotten a lot of use judging from the wear on the leather wrap.

Nice horn, but it looks more like a Philidelphia screw tip than a York...IMO

I've tried to post on this two times, must not have hit "Post". I agree with Dan, looks like an early "Philly" horn based on the collar and the tip. Also with the base band hidden under the leather. Looks like three bands are hidden under the leather that were probably added sometime in its life line.

In these pics there are very thin bands (like the width of a pencil lead) on the horn that wore off like the leather did. You can just see them peeking out. I’m going to run the metal detector over the butt end and see if there is a silver band around the plug end.

The band around the plug, and must be horn because it did not register on the equinox

Is there a seam where it was sewn around the horn? If not it may be the skin of the leg of a deer , maybe. It certainly has seen a lot of use, quite a find.

Thanks Gentlemen. I have the Samuel Grove rifle it was with though I think it was restocked 180 years ago in its period of use and then reconverted to flint in the 20th century.
