Range Rod for a 51” barrel needed
« on: October 31, 2023, 06:41:44 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a Range Rod being made that is long enough to service a Fowler with a 51” barrel? (Preferably with a female end to accept 8 or 10/32 threads)
I imagine two shorter rods could be welded together but not being a welder I am looking for other options.
Thanks!

Maybe message DGB here to see if he’d make one. I’d consider a 2-piece.

I made an extension for my range rod for my 48 inch barrel smoothbore. Took an eight inch piece if 5/16 round brass and tapped both ends 10-32. Loc-tited a threaded piece in on one end, that end goes into my range rod. The other end accepts all the normal ends.

The Log Cabin Shop sells ramrod extensions in 6-inch and 12-inch. They are brass tapped on one end for 10-31 and have a steel stud in the other end for screwing into you existing ramrod (also 10-32 threads). I have bought a couple of them and they are very well made and priced right.
Oh and by the way the 6-inch long ones make excellent and indestructible short starters. Your choice of head on one end and a jag or button jag on the other.

Muskrat Mike had the same idea as I was going to recommend:
44 Inch Brass Range Rod:

+
6 Inches 10 x 32 Extension:

+
Jag
= 51+ inch ramrod.

I have used these rods to clear and clear a variety of muzzleloaders. They are pretty tough and work well.

Military surplus .50 cal machine gun rod is 49 inches and lyou could add a threaded extension for the last few inches.  They are blued steel so you will want a nylon crown protector for it.  They break down into several pieces.

Some places have steel rods for sale, up to 5' long. Taylor and I bought 4' length of 5/16" stainless for our BPCG cleaning rods.
Found this one in the States. Pick the material, pick the diameter.

I drilled and tapped one end for 10x32 screw and roughed up and epoxied a piece of birch branch onto the other end for a handle.

Why on earth would a metal range rod be needed for a fowler? Everything just drops in.  ;D

Patched round ball loads, I’m guessing.

Yup, patched round balls if need be. Also the ramrod on this has a beautifully carved horn tip that I don’t want to mar through use.
