snaphaunce lock, How it works
« on: November 01, 2023, 05:24:04 PM »
Hello

A while ago I had a question about a Snaphaunce lock.
I couldn't understand something, but with the help of the members I can see how a double sear works.
I also sent the question to Lot Art, she sent a photo with a full cock Snaphaunce,
how beautiful is that, nice people who want to help you.

Now I have started with a Snaphaunce lock.
Here are some photos, more later.
And thanks again for the help.

Adrie

Hi

I'm sending the photos to give myself a push to continue.
It remains difficult to make a lock from a photo example.
This one requires a lot of thinking.
But when it's finished I'll definitely show it.

Greetings Adrie

Fantastic work sir. Do you do use all hand tools to make these, save a drill press? I don’t see any milling marks. This would be encouraging as I’d like to make some locks for myself.

Are you just an experienced fellow or did you use references for this lock? I assume you’re experienced, I’m just interested in any knowledge you could pass on. I’m particularly interested in wheellocks.

Thanks, Ryan

Does the hammer have the correct angle to throw the frizzen open? Have you tried it yet?

Adrie,
Beautiful work!
Is this a copy of a late Italian lock?
Just wondering as it has the vertical sear..

Pukka

I found three types of sears, one that pushes backwards, the double sear and the regular one
that I made.
This choice is that it is a bit simpler, but if you mention it, I would have gone for the double one, which I think might be more interesting
next time.

Hello

Here the parts, now only a little engraving and hardening the frizzen with Casanit and the flintstone.

Adrie,
Have you ever kept a log book on the time it takes to make this type of lock?
These locks have details I never tried to copy. Most of my locks were those
that were used at the end of the muzzle loaders common use,

hello

Today I finished the snaphaunce lock.
It took a lot of effort and the main spring was made a little stronger, but it sparked
and then it worked again, it was not easy.
