Can anyone identify who made this nice UNSIGNED gun?
« on: November 02, 2023, 01:10:05 AM »
Posting for a friend, these are all the pictures I have. Very nice UNSIGNED long rifle.  I understand it came out of a collection in Texas and is thought to have been made in the 80's.  All the iron furniture appears hand forged.  That's all I know other than it looks like a nice gun!  Thanks in advance for any info that might be shared.

Pretty cool!  But that looks like a Chambers English lock and they weren't out in the 80s, maybe late 1990s?

Did you by chance remove the barrel and see what might be stamped there?

Looks Ian Pratt to me. If it aint then somebody has a good leg up on building a gun in Ian's style. Either way its a fine looking gun. I would love to see more pics of it ;D

It's not Ian but probably one of his students in his building classes.

I was contacted privately by someone who thought Joe Schell made the gun, and someone else carved it at a later date. The gentleman that contacted me thought that he had owned the gun prior to the carving, and he also thought Schell did not always sign his earlier guns. Any thoughts on that?

I’m sure it isn’t his, but it has that warm and lovely Hershel House flavor to it.

I'd pull it apart.  Chances are there may be a marking somewhere.  Not going to hurt anything if you take your time.

I like Brian's answer best. If Joe Schell did it wouldn't it be signed? He usually signs his work (I think)

This is true 👍. I like Brian's answer best, still the most logical one

That's a gun I built many years ago . the carving along the comb, under the cheek piece and along the toe was added later by someone else.

Do you have a picture of the gun as it was originally?

Thanks to Mr. Schell for his response. I’ve spoken with Curt and he had a computer crash and lost his old photos.  Many thanks to all who have contributed.  Now we just need to figure out who carved it!
