ALR Members "Gathering" at Ft. Boonesborough, Ky - **Pictures**
« on: December 11, 2009, 06:20:29 AM »
Some time back I floated the idea of a "get-together" of ALR members in the central Kentucky area this winter for lunch and some camaraderie.  Well, the plans are set.

The management at Ft. Boonesborough State Park have agreed to allow us the use of a meeting room in one of the blockhouses at the fort on Saturday, January 16.  They have a few tables if we need them and plenty of chairs.  They are also waving the usual admission charge to the fort for us.

Let's meet at 10:30am, then go over to Hall's on the River for lunch, then back to the fort for the afternoon.

Bring your long rifles, horns, pouches, knives, &c., finished or works in progress, pictures, &c.  Stuff to sell or trade?  I sure hope to see a bunch of you there.

Ron,

Thanks for putting this together.

I'll be driving over from Louisville if anyone needs/wants a ride.

Thanks

I'm going to try to be there.

If any of you guys have never been there, it is also pretty interesting to go down to the lower part of the park, along the river, and walk the short interpretive trail they have, in the area where the original fort was.  Not really much to see, but some interesting history happened there.

PS the "Hot Brown" sandwich at Halls is really tasty... .  Goes well with a cold beer and fortunately, Clark County is not dry! ;)

Tim, that's a long drive, but we'd love to see you.  Dan B, my partner in crime, made the arrangements with the fort and he told me we have the room from 10:30 to 5:00.  Dan and I are planning to get there around 9:00, in case we need to do any set up.

I just looked on the Ft. Boonesborough State Park website and it shows the winter hours for the fort as 10:00 to 4:00, so I don't know if they will boot us out at 4:00 or not.....  but heck, if they do and we are still going strong, we could retire to Hall's.... and Guy is correct, Clark Co. is most assuredly NOT dry.

Further thoughts on things to bring to the gathering.....

Are you stuck on a trouble spot in your current project?  Bring it and ask for input.

Have you figured out a different way to do something or made a special tool?  Bring it.

Can somebody show me how to sharpen a graver?  Bring your stones!

Guys,

Long-time lurker here...actually this is probably my first post...though I found this site several years ago.

Short introduction:  I'm a retired US Army first sergeant, moved back home to the mountains of Pike Co., KY in 2006...live a few miles from Breaks of the Mountains Park on the KY-VA line, and very interested in the history of the area.

Both my shooting partner and I do quite a bit of gunsmithing...recently we've been working in a bit later period (late 19th century cartridge guns), but we're both pretty keen to get back to working on long rifles.

Won't have much to show (unless you'd like to see a recently restored Winchester 1885 high wall  ;) ), but we'd sure like to see what everyone else is working on...might just push me "over the edge"...besides, I haven't been to Boonesboro since I was a kid.

Regards,

Greg Pennell

Ron that sounds like a good time and I'd love to make the trip from Southeastern Ohio.  A lot will depend on the weather.

Don't forget.....  our little get-together is this Saturday.

I know I'm suffering from a bad case of cabin fever, so I'm really looking forward to getting out and seeing a bunch of you at the Fort.

I've had about 20 or so replies, either in this thread, an earlier one or by emails, from folks who said they will try to attend, weather permitting.  And it looks like the weather will be ok for travel.

Bring your long rifles, horns, pouches, knives, &c., finished or works in progress, pictures, questions, how-to's, tools you've made, for sale/trade and &c.

Hope to see you there.

I just talked to the folks at Fort Boonesborough and we are all set!  They are going to have us meet in the Blockhouse with the fireplace, so we can have a fire if we want.

Please note, they keep the front gates of the Fort closed during the winter, so you will need to enter the Fort thru the Gift Shop.  Park in front of the Fort and follow the sidewalk to the left.

See you there,

I just spoke to him this afternoon.

Talk about bad timing... I called to see if he was interested in coming, not even knowing that he helped you organize it.

Anyway, he's going to be laid up for a few days minimum.

We had an even dozen ALR members make the trip to Fort Boonesborough today.  There were some really great rifles brought out that were made by the ALR members and others.  I think I can safely say everyone had a good time.  We owe a huge Thank You to the Fort Boonesborough foundation for their hospitality.

Here's some pictures.  I'm sorry they are a little blurry, I hate popping flashes on people.

Paul brought a great antique German side by side.

Jeff demonstrated the Lindsay sharpening system that he uses for sharpening gravers.

We missed you Dan.  Take care of yourself.

Thanks Ron for your work in getting this thing together.  I really had a great time and met some great people.  Can't wait until the next one.  Thanks to Bill Farmer for the hot coffee.

It was a great way to spend a winter afternoon.  Thanks Ron and thanks to Bill Farmer for making us feel so welcome.  It never ceases to amaze me how many talented gunbuilders there are on this board.  There were some fine rifles  that people brought out yesterday.

If you have not been to the fort at Boonesborough in a long time, it is worth a visit to see the results of all the great effort that Bill Farmer is putting into making the fort a great educational experience about the early settlement of Kentucky.  They also host a variety of special events, speakers, "Woodsman's Weekends" and other activities throughout the year.

I also want to thank all who were responsible for this "Rendezvous". Mike and I had a fantastic time speaking with all the guys there. It's so much better than speaking all the time through computer keys. Oh yes, I also want to thank all at Ft. Boonesborough for their great hospitality. Again, much thanks!!

I have to echo the sentiments of the previous few here.  Very enjoyable day...  Met a few nice folks.  Saw a few nice guns.  Enjoyed the hospitality of Fort Boonesborough.

Sorry Dan couldn't make it, but thanks to both Ron and Dan for their efforts.

A special thanks to the guys who brought this together. (Ron, Dave, and the people at Fort Boonesborough).  Great Job!.  Dave I did not get a chance to meet you, I hope you get well soon.    Good people and some very nice rifles and accoutrement's, what a better way to spend a winters day.  Again thank you and good luck in your projects.

Hey it looks you you all had your on little CLA show or maybe you should call it your own little ALR show. Wish I could have been there.

Ft. Boonesborough was neat. I was able to visit there the last two CLA shows.

Maybe this is something that should be considered for other times and places. A day trip for those who can't make one to Ky. Maybe TN, Va, NC, etc Maybe even some of them Yankee states. Would be a great thing for everyone to be able to daytrip. Just my thoughts.
