Wait time
« on: November 15, 2023, 04:38:06 PM »
Hey everyone,
I’m thinking of getting a barrel for another project. Just curious if anyone has had any recent correspondence with some of the custom manufacturers on what their current wait times are? I know Covid really backlogged some.

Thanks,
Davison

It depends on what you are looking for. I was just down at Rice barrel and Jason had a lot of barrels in stock. You might want to give him a call and see what he has. He can certainly tell you what any wait time would be.

If you want a custom grind it could be year or more. If it is a barrel they normally make it could be a week to a few months.

I've bought barrels off the rack from Jason at shows.  For special runs or custom stuff, I've waited 6-8 months, which was expected.

Thanks, I just wanted to get an idea. I have one barrel on order through an individual, but I’m coming on 3 years, and I did not plan for that. I guess I’ll have to see what’s available. Thanks for the info!

Vaquero, what do you need?  Potentially if I have what you need I could send you a barrel and you order one and eventually it gets sent to me. I’m not going to start a third build anytime soon. One in progress, the other all lined up.

Thanks for the offer, sir. It really is a custom barrel, so that’s why I’m trying to be patient. I just wish that I could receive some type of estimate as to a wait time.

I’m trying to get a 40 to 42 inch tapered octagon barrel in 69 caliber for a patched round ball. That would put it probably about an inch and a quarter at the breech. I have all the rest of the parts, so I’m just waiting on the barrel.

Just in case, anybody’s worried, I understand that will make a beast of a rifle, but I hunt a lot on horseback out west, and have an idea of an Ashley type plains rifle.

Great project!  You’re right, I don’t have that one in my pile.

The caliber and length are the real wild cards there.  Otherwise, you could find a stock 36” Tapered in 62 cal with 1.125 breech.  Or could probably find a D weight swamped barrel in 62 and cut it off in front of “most” of the muzzle flare, (and drawfile the last few inches to straight - or slight taper). Would be a lot of effort to do that however.  And would not gain you much overall length in effort spent. Maybe 38”-40”.  But might be an alternative to waiting.

He specifically wants a .69 cal...not a .62.

Ed Rayle or Bobby Hoyte might fill the order sooner.
