Another Woodsrunner
« on: November 16, 2023, 07:44:07 PM »
I know folks here are not super impressed with kit builds but I'm pretty happy with how my Woodsrunner turned out, so i figured I'd show it off a little bit. This is the second rifle I've ever "built" and the first time I've ever done any carving on wood of any kind. The carving was a nerve-wracking ordeal but overall I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

I wish I would have reshaped the cheekpiece BEFORE carving the scroll on the left of the stock because I would have followed the contour of the cheekpiece with it, but unfortunately the idea to reshape it sort of came about as the carving evolved and can't be helped now.

It's been another thoroughly enjoyable learning process and I will be hunting with this rifle in just a couple weeks.

Thank you! That was just sort of a design I had in my head that I liked. I'm not sure if I saw something similar on an original somewhere or not.

Green grass and green Oak leaves in Ill.? We're under snow here & haven't had green leaves since late Sept.
Really nice photography. :o 8).

I took those pictures back in early October, not many green oak leaves left now. No snow yet though thankfully!

Very nice and tasteful. Not overdone. Good job.
Thank you! I didn't want to get too carried away with decor or bite off more than I could chew with my first attempt at carving. I do tend to prefer the simpler carving anyway as a personal taste, so it worked out well!

Thank you all! I'm very happy with how it turned out. I think the desire to do an oak leaf was a bit of a callback to my Scandinavian ancestry. I was really worried about being able to execute the carving properly, but I tried to keep it as simple as I could, and I'm happy with the result!

Thanks! Initially I did one coat of tannic acid and aquafortis but wasn't happy with tone. So I did another coat of both and then one final coat of aquafortis to bring out the reddish brown tones more. Then I finished it with three coats of Tried & True.
