.65 Fullstocked "Hawken" Rifle
« on: November 20, 2023, 06:18:33 PM »
I am really looking forward to getting this one.  It has a 40" barrel (listed as .65), Roller lock and great Tiger Maple stock.  The German Silver fittings really pop.  Sadly, no information on builder, but my hat's off to whoever it was.

Looks well made and more comfortable to shoot than any close copy of a J&S Hawken rifle would be. Unusual elements (buttplate, wire inlay, nosecap) chosen here but hopefully great handling and accurate.

.65 should make a good hunting and "match" calibre.

Thanks, Rich.  I am hoping it will be a shooter. I like Big Bores and I cannot lie!

Outside of the trigger guard, what makes this a Hawken?

Im guessing this is a percussion rendition of Ashleys “super hawken” he had jake and sam make him around 1823 to keep the natives off his keelboats. His was supposed to throw a 1 oz ball from a barrel 3 1/2 feet long. I think Baird had one made in .69 caliber as that is what the US issue was at the time and a .69 caliber ball is close to that 430gr/1oz mark. Looks like a dandy elk rifle.

Cool. Arkansas does have an elk season,  but the chances of drawing a tag are loooong!

A .69 calibre ball, if 15 bore at .677" weighs 467gr.  A .682" ball that I use in my .69, weighs 482gr. An actual 14 bore (.693") ball weighs 500gr.
A .622" ball weighs 437.5gr. = 1 ounce. A .650" ball is 17bore and weighs 412gr., rounded up from 411.76.
These are indeed, good elk and moose rifles. They will also quite handily kill deer and bears - and squirrels, but "Heavens, such a bore is rather large for squirrels in one desires their flesh, for fare".
Old joke about Baird's .69, from "The Primitive Rifleman".

I am assuming there is a picture here BigSky, but I cannot see it. I have tried clearing my history, clearing cookies, got Tim involved and still nothing.

I can also see the pics in the OPs first post. Thank you Daryl for the info re the relative ball weights. Ive thought about a .69 build like the Baird gun but as the years have passed and  my testosterone levels fallen I have less interest in it. I do have a .62 barrel sitting on the bench with a bunch of Dimick parts from Don Stith- rest his soul- once I finish my middle boys .54 hunting rifle I will start on it. Interested to hear a shooting report when you get the rifle.

Would someone re-post those pictures under their own name. Just want to see if they appear.
