Lugs on fowler trigger guard
« on: January 18, 2024, 05:41:29 AM »
Should there be a pinning lug on the front of this trigger guard above the acorn?  It looks like there might have been one that was cut off, but I can't tell if that is so or if it was just from casting.  Thanks.

No, the ramrod hole is under it.

Where'd you buy that TG if I may ask? Mine has cast-in border lines on the bow and bow looks smaller.

Hi,
The only forward lug you need is the one still attached.  Keep it high so the pin can be located within the lock mortise and not through the lock panel flat.

I'd suggest you keep the rear lugs for pins as well. Most English fowling guns had pinned grip rails, or hidden hook and nails.

As others have said, that is not a lug it is a casting gate. Just file it off smooth. I usually inlet that next one back as it is a cast in "Stiffener" rib for that skinny part and will not interfere with the ram rod.

Here I was thinking that big square lug in front had to be there so you can pin through it to hold the guard on. It might not need to be that wide or tall.

Hi Jason,
The guard you have with the smaller bow and raised borders along the edges is more historically correct than the guard shown in this thread.  I do not like the husk and acorn guards with those simple big bows.  I don't know what they are based on but they are unlike any original English gun I've ever seen for the time period they are supposed to represent.  To match originals, that guard should look like these examples of contemporary and original guns.

Those big guards are not worth spit when it comes to recreating original guns.

Dave,

I'm glad you pointed the guard bow shape out.  Not something many would recognize, but very important.  I've always wondered why the casting shown was made as it is.
