Instruction on lock reassembly, new type percussion.
« on: January 19, 2024, 11:50:01 PM »
Anyone have a link, or personal knowledge, on how to reinstall the plunger and spring in the new type (Investarms) percussion lock? Is there a tool I need to purchase?

Coil spring, with a plunger (rod) longways through the center of the spring?

Is there a hole in the rod for a capture pin?

Simply loop a small wire around the head of the pin, grab it with your pliers, then just pull that so to compress the coil spring and slide the rod into place. About a 10 second job.

Track sells a tool not very expensive but tricky to use. Other than that put the spring on the pin, insert the end of the pin into the hole in the lock plate. With the hammer all the way forward, compress the spring until the pin catches the tumbler. Got that? Good luck, wear eye protection! Be prepared to search hecks half acre to find parts when they slip and launch all over!!

OK, did according to the u tube vid., I mentioned and it's done. Bloodied my thumb because the only difference between his lock and mine is that where he has a round drum towards the rear of the lock where the rod rides through (and what he uses for leverage) mine is a block, a block with sharp edges. A leather glove helped.
I had a notion to rid the lock of the ugly faux case hardening color and finish it in the grey seen on many originals, as some on the web have claimed they are but you know how that goes. Now after this bit of work I'm reassessing that idea. I'm now toying with the thought of finding a traditional style lock but have to wonder if I'd have to cut wood to accommodate the flat spring. That and is this kit worth that further expenditure? Edited to add, after checking TOW, tooguns may have something, doing it without the tool is possible, the tool may make it more possible.

Seems to me, back in the 70's, I used a pair of needle nose pliers and experienced no problem. I was younger and stronger then, not necessarily smarter. ;D

I also used needle nose pliers, as the author of the video, only he has either modifiedhis or they were made with a hole at the tip to fit the circumference of the pin.
Once I had it back together I was on the fence of whether or not I was going to brown the plate. But then, after getting it back together, I noticed how sticky the lock was. I had stoned the sear but it wasn't enough, whether or not it got stickier because I had taken it down is an unknown. Seemed it was smoother before I monkeyed with it. So now awaiting the tool from TOW, I'll brown that plate yet.

Update, the tool tooguns suggested is the way to go if you have to take the lock down for any reason. Everything is controlled and quick.

Video above, time 6.03.

Wrong!  Never pry a hammer off a tumbler.

It would be nice if the work was a little better lit. Working in the dark.
