Been awhile since I was here. I am looking for a barrel in .62/20 to fit my T/C Hawken - 15/16". Does anybody know of a source? Appreciate any help. Thanks

I'm not sure a 15/16ths inch TC barrel should be bored to 62 caliber. If my Chinese arithmetic is correct a 15/16ths inch barrel is;

.9375 in diameter. Subtract .620 that makes total meat left at .3175. Divide that by 2 for two barrel walls and what is left is .15875 for barrel wall thickness.

Normally a .62 fowler barrel diameter back at the firing chamber is larger than an inch, and probably closer to 1-1/8th inch leaving much thicker barrel walls back where ignition is. Plus, the fowler barrel tapers slowly to the thin section. A .62 caliber 15/16ths inch TC barrel will be thin, slightly over 5/32 inch all the way back to the patent breech.

Every one of these I have heard of were done using a 1-inch TC barrel.

Years ago, I purchased a 20 ga. barrel kit from Sharon Rifle Barrels that is 15/16" in diameter. It contained the breech, under rib and ramrod pipes. I have shot it a few times with 55 grs. of 2ff Goex and 7/8 oz. of shot. James Levy

James, are you offerring this for sale? Or just informing me that these are available?

Admittedly, I am sort of in & out of the ML field but I thought Sharon barrel company went out of biz years ago...

I'm sorry if I misled anyone. The barrel is not for sale. I was addressing the concern that the barrel at 15/16" in diameter was too thin for a 20 ga. barrel. Mine seems to be okay for my purposes. James Levy

Bore it to 24 gauge instead of 20 gauge. That will allow you to shoot .58 cal. Minie style bullets for big game, and shot for ducks, and upland game.

Really..!? 12g in a 15/16" barrel? Per Mr. Hatfiled's post above, that would make an even thinner berrel wall at the breech...

Toledo Arms could have made it from some high strength modern gun steel. Maybe even tapered the firing chamber down to a cone shape to allow for powder, wads, and shot. Or possibly making a very long patent breech with a communication hole large in diameter to hold the powder charge in a thicker area. But I'm only speculating.

One important thing to consider is that the Thompson Center Hawken does not have enough drop in the stock to look down a bare shotgun barrel to aim with a bead sight making for an uncomfortable hold. Holding the rifle in a comfortable position and looking at the bead will require tilting the barrel up high causing the gun to pattern high. Of course you can hold low.

Good point Bob. While this gun started out in life as a T/C Hawken, actually nearly none of it remains in original form. The barrels are GM, lock & triggers are L&R, hardware is different, the stock is Pecatonica modified to have a greater drop than original T/C. Actually, the only thing that remains original T/C is the barrel tang! That said, the lock & barrels are designed & match as per T/C design.

As an aside, I've contacted John Taylor in Lewiston to build a barrel for me. Based on all data, with thanks to many of you, I've decided on a .54/28g given the 15/16" barrel size.

I was in Bob Hoyt's shop the other day and he was boring out a TC to a smooth bore 28. You would probably save a good bit of money doing that as opposed to making a new barrel. Just a thought.

Just a thought.....but if you wanted more drop in comb, couldn't you "squeeze" another inch out of the existing stock?

I re-shaped my old T\C kit rifle stock, took more wood off and still have probably to much wood left.

Again...just thinking out loud.

I do this with TC stocks, no cheek slapping, Fred L showed me how.

The before and after. I reduced the wrist diameter a good bit and brought down the comb.

I actually did this with the Pecatonica stock. I cut about an inch off the comb & then glued & pinned it to the underside of the stock. Reshaped the stock..yiu can see a line where the modification was made but, frankly I think it's hardly noticable and ir gave me the drop I wanted.
